Wong Chuk Hang
San Wai was established in 1870s. The Old House at No. 10 Wong Chuk
Hang San Wai (黃竹坑新圍10號舊民居) is one of the few traditional Chinese
vernacular houses preserved on Hong Kong Island. When we visit this old
house, there is not much information in the internet. Since it should
not be difficult to locate, we are pleased to search for a while.
This
old house is only an individual house in San Wai which was accorded a
Grade 2 status by the Antiquities Advisory Board of Hong Kong. Apart
from this old house, there is nothing to see nearby. But San Wai is very
close to the Ocean Park. If you are not
tired, you may visit San Wai before or after your visit to Ocean Park on Saturdays and Sundays.
Since
this old house in San Wai is not large, if you just want to have a
look, ten minutes is sufficient. But if you love to see old construction
and architecture, you may spend an hour or more to look around, inside
and outside the old house.
Some people may say it is not
worthwhile to spend money in renovating and maintaining this old house
or similar in Hong Kong, it is a waste of time and money. But I do not
think so. In so doing, at least the younger generation can know more
about the old architecture of Hong Kong. It is needed to preserve old
construction to complete and link the story of history. If money is not
spent in this way, it will also be wasted and abused by the civil
servants in this or that way, like eating, entertainment, buying gifts
for officials of other political bodies, wrong construction, and ... and
... .
