Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail

Lung
Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail (龍躍頭文物徑), located at the northeast of Luen Wo
Market in Fanling of the New Territories, was officially opened to the
public on 4 December 1999. Lung Yeuk Tau (LYT) is in fact about the five
walled villages and six villages, the people are descendants of Tangs
Family. Some traditional Chinese constructions, like ancestral hall,
temple, walls and entrance gates can still be found and are preserved in
good condition. These bear testimony to the historical and social
developments of the area over the past centuries.

To get to Lung
Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail, you may take Green Minibus 54K from Fanling
Station of the East Rail Line. It takes about ten minutes.

Shum Him Tong is a church, constructed in 1926 and extended in 1951. It is a private property and not open to the public.

There
are not many to see at Ma Wat Wai (Ma Wat Walled Village). A pair of
chained-ring iron gates were installed at the main entrance.

Lo
Wai is the first walled village (Lo means Old in Chinese language).
This entrance and the walls are restored in 1998, with the financial
support of Hong Kong Jocky Club Charities Trust.

This is the water well just behind the main entrance, supplying water to the whole walled village (Lo Wai) in the past.

Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall, built in 16th century, is the main ancestral hall in Long Yeuk Tau. It is open to the public.

Kun Lung Wai (Kun Lung Walled Village) is also known San Wai.

Four watchtowers were constructed at the four corners of the enclosing walled village for defence purpose.

Tung Kok
Wai (Tung Kok Walled Village), build in 13th century, has a history of
more than 600 years. It got its name since it is situated in the east of
Lung Yeuk Tau. The walled village was constructed on a raised
platform, protecting village against the risk of flooding.

Most historical constructions and villages are located at the lower part of Lung Yeuk Tau (it is also called the South Trail).

Farmers are still working in fields in Lung Yeuk Tau area.

Water in "creek" is clean and clear.

This is why we can find baby frog of one centimeter only. It is very lovely, we look at one another for thirty seconds.

It is like a painting. These trees are outside Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall.

We
appreciate the preservation of this heritage trail in Fanling. It is
not an easy task to preserve historical constructions and present to the
public. But there is still room of improvement in Lung Yeuk Tau
Heritage Trail. There are not enough maps and instructions to tourists.
Sometimes, we are at lost and do not know how to go back or go to the
next spots or where we are. Even though there are sufficient maps and
instructions, Lung Yeuk Tau may not give you a great impact or surprise
as that of other historical relics. Anyway, it is a nice walking tour of
three hours to see the constructions of the past. After the trail walk,
it is of course time to eat.
